I didn’t really know what to invest in nor what would truly suit my needs to help me achieve my investment objectives, but a few years on, after investing in Vanguard Lifestrategy Fund, I knew that this wasn’t the fund for me.

My first problem with Vanguard Lifestrategy Fund is around diversification. John Bogle, founder of Vanguard once said, instead of trying to find a needle in a haystack, just buy the whole haystack, but how big does the haystack need to be to get a well diversified portfolio to minimise risk and maximise returns? Well a fund with over 20,000 holdings, seems like a little overkill, especially when you compare it to some common studies around the world which suggest between 10-30 holdings within a portfolio is more than enough diversification.

The other problem is around opportunity cost, from having money invested in this fund I could see quite clearly it was vastly underperforming some of my other individual stock investments and even my other Vanguard VUSA S&P500 ETF, and as a result, due to the vast underperformance it made sense to sell up and allocate the money to either one single fund like the S&P500 to condense my investment portfolio, or instead perhaps invest it elsewhere…
